Alternate Versions of Songs
I love music. It's not uncommon for me to have headphones on while working listening to whatever catches my ear. Something that's caught my ear lately has been alternate versions of albums and songs I love.
Below are four examples of what I mean. They take artists, albums, and songs I love and turn them into something new and amazing in their own way.
The Wonder Years - Burst & Decay
The Wonder Years have released several albums with alternate versions of their songs. Their normal sound is pop punk, but these alternate versions are more acoustic and calm. Some have violins and guest vocals. These versions don't detract from the original songs, but they sound amazing and show a different side to the band.
The Menzingers - From Exile
I love Hello Exile by The Menzingers. It was a fantastic album with some catchy songs, including a currently apt song America (You're Freaking Me Out). In 2020, well, the pandemic happened and they couldn't tour. But what they did do was put together the album From Exile, which feels appropriately named. They didn't write new songs, so much as re-imagined the Hello Exile album with unique acoustic versions. The released songs weren't just one-to-one acoustic versions either, each had a slightly different feel that almost made them seem like different songs.
Rise Against - The Ghost Note Symphonies, Vol. 1
Much like the Burst & Decay series by The Wonder Years, this is an album with various Rise Against songs slowed down into more acoustic and calm versions of several songs of theirs. As a fan of their music, it's again nice to hear a new version of the songs that sound great in their own right.
Dave Hause - Versus, Nurses, & Hearses
Dave Hause is one of my favorite artists. I first heard of him on Pandora back in the day with his song, We Could Be Kings. I was hooked. What I didn't realize at the time was that his solo stuff came after him being in The Loved Ones. I ended up listening to them and liked them as well. They were a little more punk, but you definitely heard a similar sound and style in Dave's solo music. In 2023, he released Versus, followed by Nurses & Hearses in 2024. All three albums were more acoustic versions of The Loved Ones' songs. It wouldn't surprise me if part of it was to re-gain control over the songs, but either way, the three albums sound great. I just wish I could get Nurses on vinyl, but alas it was only released on vinyl in Europe.
