Just Leave X
There have been higher profile sites and people returning to X lately including MacStories, John Gruber and Casey Newton. It's disappointing to say the least, especially when they're trying to claim the moral high ground.
I left Twitter/X right as Elon Musk took ownership. I kept my account on private mode for about a year or so, but eventually deleted it entirely. I have the backup still and might follow Lynn Fisher's example and archive them here on my site.
At the end of the day, my moral values prevent me from supporting a white supremacist and nazi. My being active on X, regardless of whether the content is "interesting" or Elon unfucked his algorithm removing his bullshit from your feeds only provides him more value as it's more traffic and activity for an audience. And I think that's also why seeing these people who left X before for the same moral reasons are now returning with excuses that are so completely twisted up, they might as well just be a pretzel.
If you care about democracy. If you care about civil rights, the well being of those in marginalized communities, being a good human being, leave X. Either make your account private and inactive or delete it, and go elsewhere. Bluesky and Mastodon all have their own quirks, but they're not a nazi-run enterprise.
As for me, you can find me on Mastodon and Bluesky, though I'll probably end up being a little more active on Mastodon.
